Frequently Asked Questions

We are a character and leadership development school. We use the platform of Shotokan Karate to develop the leaders of the future who will solve the world’s problems.
It’s a story about a boy who saw his best friend being badly beaten up by bullies. This left him feeling scared, helpless and a little angry. He started to go into a downward spiral in his life. His parents saw this and brought him into our school and after speaking with one of our instructors they made the decision as a family that he was going to become a black belt. Then he went home and had a dream. In his dream he met a famous karate master who encouraged him to climb to the top of Ryoku Mountain where he would take his black belt test in the Temple of the Clouds. But this was not an easy journey. He met many challenges along the way. The challenges transformed him into the person he needed to be so that he could pass his black belt test when he got to the top. Tiger’s Great Journey is a Hero’s Journey.
A Hero is defined as someone who answers the Call to Adventure and dedicates themselves to a purpose outside of themselves. Mythologists have discovered heroes in every cultures all around the world. They’ve learned that heroes hold a high position, that they are respected, admired, adored, and are the subject of countless stories, poems, songs, and movies. The abundance of Superheroes in American culture is a great example. People love heroes. It’s in our DNA to become heroes. But heroes don’t have to be visibly flamboyant, they can be quiet and unassuming and very much an ‘ordinary person’. The Hero’s Journey books that we have authored explain the Acts and Stages of this journey. Author Eric W. Dolan in an article in PsyPost says that in a series of studies, researchers have discovered that viewing one’s life through the lens of the Hero’s Journey – a narrative framework where a protagonist overcomes challenges and undergoes transformation – can significantly enhance the sense of meaning in life. The findings, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, provide evidence that reshaping personal narratives to align with this archetypal story can lead to increased well-being and resilience. Our leadership program is designed to help our students benefit from this archetype and from this Great Journey.
We are known for the lifelong benefits our students receive from our training.
Parental involvement is the one factor above all else that will determine the success of a child. At any level of education, the kids who do best are the ones whose parents are engaged in the program with them.
A highly skilled martial artist will have a clear mind, a strong body and an unstoppable spirit. They are tenacious and determined and will do whatever needs to be done. They will also be resilient and bounce back quickly from defeats, disappointments, illnesses, injury or setbacks. Their unstoppable attitude means just what it says they can’t be stopped. Equipped with these inner qualities, they will be in a position to succeed at whatever they set their mind to.
